Ulysses S. Grant was a war hero, a military mastermind, and a passionate lover. The history books paint Ulysses' life in blood and glory as one of the most successful generals the United States has ever seen, while his fiery, emotional side remains mostly in the shadows. The man had a great fondness for far more than cigars and whisky, as the Southern Bell he made his wife, Julia Dent, knew all too well. Soldiering across the country frequently put Ulysses at a great remove from Julia, and over the course of their romance he would mail her over 300 fervid love letters. Julia's father, a proud slaver, did not take kindly to a Yankee advancing on his daughter, but there was little he could do to stop this monumental unification of North and South. We know how this story ends, with the emancipation of those long subjugated and glory to the Union, but to understand how Ulysses S. Grant's heart played a part in his allegiance to the cause, we need to go back to the day he met Julia Dent and follow the paper trail of passion and pain that nearly brought the great general to heel.
