Celebrating Flag Day

In January of 1854, Young Captain Ulysses S. Grant arrived at his lonely outpost, Fort Humboldt, on Humboldt Bay in Eureka, CA. Above the fort flew a flag: The flag of the 4th Infantry, his regiment of 11 years.

In 2006, our producer and historian, Patricia Cameron, visited Fort Humboldt. The Redwood Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution brought the original flag to the fort for her to see. Patricia wrote: "Perhaps this was the only comfort Ulysses had at the fort; gazing at the flag with the knowledge that he was serving his country."
