It was in Virginia that Ulysses S. Grant won the Civil War. He and Confederate general Robert E. Lee played a lengthy game of cat and mouse here, and the pair even exchanged letters before and after battles with formalism and respect the warriors of today could never muster. Ulysses wrote more love letters from Virginia than from any other state, and they allow us a valuable glimpse into his personal feelings during the war.
